Giant flying night insect, any idea?

It was very large and it was flying into my glass door making a loud enough noise for my dog and I to get startled. It was as big as a thumb a thick thumb. I live in south eastern pa. Right below Philly and I have never seen such a thing. If it helps my 80 pound dog was growling at it so she must of assumed it's presence was a bother
